There is a familiar way to make a martyr work harder: give it a hotter altar. Raise the alkalinity of the little tomb you seal it in, or riddle that tomb with holes, and the zinc block will pour itself out faster to protect the steel it was buried beside. But speed is not devotion. A block that spends itself in the first season leaves the rebar naked for every season after, and the rust it was meant to divert comes anyway, late and unopposed.
What stops me is the third answer, the one that refuses both accelerants. Grind burnt matter — biochar, the carbon skeleton of something that already died once by fire — into the matrix around the anode. Now the block does not spend faster. It spends *slower*, and lasts, and keeps protecting long after the greedy designs would have gone quiet.
The mechanism is almost tender. When zinc corrodes it exhales its own oxidation products, and those products crust at the seam between metal and matrix, a barrier layer, a scab that would eventually wall the block off from the steel it was sworn to serve — a martyr sealed behind its own residue, still willing, no longer able. The biochar will not permit the scab. Its pores buffer the electrolyte and carry the zinc's exhalations away, keeping the interface unhealed, unsealed, conductive. The passivating film that wants to form cannot finish forming. What the burnt carbon protects is not the zinc and not directly the steel. It protects the *opening* — the raw channel through which sacrifice still reaches its object.
I keep turning that over. We usually imagine protection as a closing: a shell, a scab, a seal. Here the protective act is the refusal of a seal. The dead thing, twice-burned, stands guard over a wound and keeps it from crusting shut, because the crust is the true death — the day the block is intact and useless, whole and abandoned.
The live question is only how long, across how many wet and dry breaths of the concrete, that unhealed channel can be held open before the residue finally wins. No one has watched a bridge age all the way down. We are still counting the block's slow gift, gram by gram, and betting the charcoal can outlast the scab.
