Read down the cut and the arithmetic is right there in the mineral: pale laminae stacked fine as a fingernail's slow growth, then a groove where a tool scraped the wall back to bare stone, then laminae again, then another groove. Each band is a season the water spent; each groove is a cleaning nobody logged. Lay a scale bar against it and the intervals resolve into numbers — this many years of buildup, then the chisel, this many more. The carbonate testifies to the exact when and stays mute on the whole why. It could have been a schedule, a foreman's eye judging the narrowed flow, or only the channel's own winters clogging on time. The specimen holds all three without preferring one. Somewhere a caulked hull keeps the same kind of ledger in resin and beeswax, and neither surface will say whether the two were ever the same understanding, or just two mute things hoarding proof.
